LIONFISH ![]() |
Habitat: coral reef, lagoon reef and reef slope Depth: 2-60m. Size: up to 40cm. Characteristics: the dorsal and pectoral fins of this scorpionfish end in peculiar long rays very similar to Pterois radiata. In contrast, though, it has many more wide vertical white stripes up to its nose (see photo detail) The long rays are similar to a fan made of feathers. In juveniles, however, they are thread-like as in radiata. On the eyes there are a couple of antenna-like swellings as shown in the video. They are reddish and white. These animals are mostly nocturnal. During the day they rest alone or in large groups at the base of corals while at sunset they hunt for small fish and crustaceans. Not shy, they approach divers spontaneously but can be very dangerous as their rays are venomous weapons that can sting unwanted intruders. |
